First Screaming Eagles Magazine

History: The 101st Airborne Division was one of the first large combat units to arrive in Vietnam. In June 1965, the 1st Brigade of the 101st arrived via a troop transport ship. The remainder of the 101st stayed in Fort Campbell. The 1st Brigade of the 101st operated independently until January of 1968, when the rest of the Division arrived. During this early period of the war, much was unknown about fighting this style of war, and 1st Brigade units learned 'on the job' and developed methods and techniques that were later taught and used theater wide. During this period nearly all 101st troopers deployed in Vietnam were Airborne and jump qualified. In later years the 101st was redesignated as Airmobile, and not all members were jump qualified. While all of the 101st served well and valiantly, a certain comradery developed among the early 1st Brigade troops. This led to the formation of a special Veteran's Association (1st Brigade Separate), and the publication of this magazine.

Beginning in 1998, Ivan Worrell (101st First Brigade Information Officer 66-67) began publishing a quarterly magazine recording the history of the 1st Brigade of the 101st in Vietnam. He went on to publish 70 issues, in many of which the 2/502 is well represented. He stopped publication in 2015, and passed away in 2017(obituary). It should be noted that Ivan was 70 when he published the first issue in 1998, and the last issue was published just before his 88th birthday. That is remarkable dedication to the 101st.

All 70 issues have been scanned and available here. OCR (optical character recognition) has been applied, so each file is searchable in a PDF reader. Where there is clear text the results are satisfactory, however in reproductions of old news articles with small or fuzzy text the results are not accurate.

The first 4 issues used the name Diplomats and Warriors, after which the name was changed to First Screaming Eagles in Vietnam, which it remained till the end of publication.

Each issue is a PDF file, 25 to 30+ MB in size. It is recommended that they be read on a desktop computer (may or may not be satisfactory on a small phone screen/connection). Note: There were only 4 issues of Diplomat and Warrior published. Ivan published 4 issues per year. The first issue of D&W was published mid-year 1998, so Volume 1 contained only issues number 1 and 2. The following year (1999), only 2 issues of D&W were published, so they became Volume 2, numbers 1 and 2 (published in the first half of 1999).
Then the name changed to First Screaming Eagles in Vietnam, and the numbering started over. That is, the last 2 issues of 1999 were Volume 1, numbers 1 and 2 of the The First Screaming Eagles.
Volume 2 was published in 2000, with issue numbers 1 through 4, and each volume until the end of publication maintained that numbering.
